The basis for the development of the town was the old trading route Strada d’Alemagna, which goes through the Val Pusteria and in Dobbiaco turns off to the Val di Landro, and which connected the former economic centres of Venice and Augsburg. Because of the development of Val Pusteria through the railway in 1871, tourism became of increasing importance for the town.
