Dobbiaco: Attractions and Culture

With the construction of the Southern railway from Lienz to Fortezza by the Austro-Hungarian railway company Südbahngesellschaft tourism came to the country. In 1878 the Grand Hotel was opened and from that time on the European nobility and jet set gathered here. The Südbahnhotel was the start of the development of tourism in Dobbiaco and steady investments ensured the constant expansion of the hotel.

Eventful development of the Grand Hotel in Dobbiaco
The Grand Hotel suffered only little damage during the First World War and was used as a hospital. At the end of the war it was in a parlous state and there were no visitors. In 1934 the Grand Hotel was auctioned and taken over by the land credit institute Venezia Tridentina. Fortunately, a period of economic growth followed and the Italians discovered Dobbiaco as an alpine Mecca of summer tourism.

The Grand Hotel today
In 1991 the South Tyrolean government began with the renovation of the property and built the new Congress Center Grand Hotel. Today, the hotel houses one of the most modern Culture and Congress Centers, a youth hostel, a first class restaurant, the Nature Park House 3 Peaks, a music school, youth services, an adult education centre, social housing and a holiday home. The heart of the house is the “Gustav Mahler Saal” auditorium with its excellent acoustics and seating for 460.
