The Ninth Symphony is Gustav Mahler’s last completed work. Most of it was written in the summer of 1909 in Altschluderbach near Toblach, a place he recommended to his friend Arnold Berliner: “It is magnificent here and surely will restore body and soul.” The symphony was premiered posthumously on June 26, 1912 in Vienna, under the direction of Bruno Walter; Mahler himself never heard it.

BY CAR: Travelling from either the north (Innsbruck-Brennero/Brenner) or south (Verona-Bolzano/Bozen) along the A22 Brennero motorway, exit at Bressanone/Brixen – Val Pusteria/Pustertal and continue in the direction of Brunico/Bruneck and on to Dobbiaco/Toblach. From the east: Felbertauern-Lienz (Austria) -Toblach/Dobbiaco BY RAIL: Travelling along the Brennero line (Innsbruck – Verona), change at Fortezza/Franzensfeste for the local Val Pusteria line to Dobbiaco (Fortezza-Dobbiaco takes just over 1 hour).
