Grand Hotel

Culture and congress center in Dobbiaco

With the construction of the Southern railway from Lienz to Fortezza in the 2nd half of the 19 century tourism arrived in the holiday region 3 Zinnen in the Dolomites. In 1878 the Grand Hotel was opened and from that time on the European nobility and jet set spent their holidays in Dobbiaco.

The Grand Hotel suffered only little damage during the First World War and was used as a hospital. At the end of the war it was in a parlous state and the visitors returned to Dobbiaco only slowly. In 1934 the Grand Hotel was auctioned off and subsequently changed hands several times.

In 1991 the South Tyrolean government began with the renovation of the property and built the new Congress Center Grand Hotel. Today, the building houses one of the most modern Culture and Congress Centers, the nature park house 3 Peaks, a first class restaurant and a youth hostel, a music school, youth services, an adult education centre, social housing and a holiday home run by the episcopal welfare relief organization. The heart of the house is the “Gustav Mahler Saal” auditorium with its excellent acoustics and seating for 460.
